Engineering Positions

Foxmarks engineers all share the following highly desirable traits:
  • They love to code, and prefer to code in a team of people they enjoy and respect.
  • They are passionate about creating high quality software that even they would use.
  • They live to conceive and deliver products that solve problems for real people.
  • They are interested in the world around them and want to help make it a better place.
  • They are smarter than their boss (and yet there is still mutual respect).
We are currently looking for engineers with the traits mentioned above to fill the following specific roles:
  1. Applications Engineer
    • You love to build web apps.
    • You may prefer client side or server side, but you are comfortable with both.
    • You care about usability, and you've probably even read a book on the subject.
    • You may have experience working with some of these:
      • JavaScript
      • XUL
      • Python and Pylons, or another WSGI web framework like Django or TurboGears
  2. Generalist
    • Server, client, it's all good -- you see all the pieces as a giant buffet and you want to sample it all.
    • Being helpful makes you happy -- you gravitate towards the areas of greatest pain in your group and you make things right.
    • You get satisfaction from working on a variety of projects (and none for long) -- you see a problem and you can't help yourself from learning enough on the spot until you can fix it and move on to the next thing that piques your interest.
    • You notice that many computing problems, despite their diversity of context, derive from a fairly similar set of underlying principles -- the flavors are different, but the reasons are the same, and digging for underlying principles is how you work.

Management Positions

Foxmarks managers all share the following traits:
  • They genuinely like and respect every member of their team.
  • They believe that a manager's job is to give everyone on the team the opportunity to do their best work every day.
  • They foster an atmosphere of respect, cooperation, and playfulness.
  • They enjoy good food and conversation with their team as often as possible.
  • They may know how to code, but they prefer managing people and projects.
We are currently looking for managers with the traits mentioned above to fill the following specific roles:
  1. Engineering Manager
    • You share the traits of the Foxmarks engineers (see above).
    • You like to be close to the code, even if you're not the one checking it in.
    • You believe that process is important, but prefer it in small doses, judiciously applied.
    • You are happy if a large part of your job is project management, because it's not just the "how", it's also the "what" that interests you.
    • You think having a QA team is a good thing, but you know how to make quality software without one if you have to.
    • You may have had experience managing people or projects involving:.
      • consumer websites
      • distributed systems
      • large data sets
  2. Operations Manager
    • You share the traits of the Foxmarks engineers (see above).
    • You may have a preference for managing people or systems, but you're comfortable and competent at both.
    • You feel compelled to have solid knowledge of all parts of your system.
    • You don't feel right if you aren't sure that everything that can be usefully monitored is in fact being monitored.
    • You don't rest until everything that can be usefully automated is.
    • Out of date libraries are like sand in your underwear.
    • You may have experience with, and even a preference for, the following tools and technologies:
      • Nagios and Munin
      • Linux, particularly Debian/Ubuntu
      • perl and Python
      • MySQL (perhaps grudgingly)
      • Network technologies (DNS, TCP, IP, HTTP, etc.)
